Morning Snow

Morning Snow by Mary Grace van der Kroef

It may be dark inside,
but without it’s strangely light.
As the world lay sleeping,
nature donned a blanket, white

Though the sky is thick,
with heavy clouds of gray.
The early morning darkness,
is lightened by winter’s play.

I sit in my dark room,
watch the lights return.
Black to gray, with blue and white.
the seasons complete a turn.

Off in the distance,
past trees and lake, there’s more.
Under clouds horizon peaks
a glimmer over the far shore.

It was white and bright but brief
as if the sun is shy.
It’s been a while since winter played
beneath a sun-filled sky.

So she’ll stay behind her clouds,
soften down her light.
This first encounter, not the time,
she’ll savour her delight.

Calm Snow

A blanket of cold.
Gentle, as it floats from grey
Enclosed sky. Now sleep.

God given layers
cover natures dieing throws.
Dignity at end.

Disintegrating,
a slow giving up of self
back into the web.

Six Word Stories (50)

Have you ever stood in the middle of a snowfall, and just listened?

Our world is so busy there aren’t many places quiet enough to hear snow. But I have been blessed to have lived in one of those places.

It can be hidden by the blowing of wind, but if you just stand and listen to the tinkle of it landing on a waterproof coat. You will hear joy.

The flakes never stay long. You can watch them melt almost instantly as body heat reaches out to their lace like structures.

It’s almost as if they never touched you. But the sound will live in your soul.

This winter, if you can, find a place to listen to the snow. It also sings for you as you walk though its drifts.

Christmas Crystals

With dampness in the air they cling
to just about everything.
Every limb is painted white,
making night a bit more bright.
